The story of Data Time Space begins in 2012 at the MIT Media Lab, where Valentin, James, and Ben created the Reality Editor research project, an augmented reality environment allowing users to understand and control the connected physical world. They widely publicized the Reality Editor research in 2013 when invited to present during the keynote of Qualcomm’s Uplinq conference alongside CEO Paul Jacobs. The team continued, publishing several papers, earning three Master’s degrees, and defending one doctorate further advancing the Reality Editor, before graduating from MIT in 2017. At this point, the power and flexibility of the Reality Editor had caught the eye of Jim Heppelmann, CEO of PTC, who recruited Valentin and Ben to lead PTC’s Reality Lab while James pursued his dream of working for Mozilla.

In their new roles, Valentin and Ben drove PTC’s vision of future innovation and provided leadership worldwide in AR technology with the Reality Editor platform. The Reality Editor was soon renamed the Vuforia Spatial Toolbox to reflect its growing beneficial relationships with PTC technologies and products. Over the next few years, James would rejoin the team, and over time it would grow to eight outstanding innovators. At this expanded scale, the team worked to shape AR, XR, and spatial computing research and product development across PTC through collaborations and thought leadership. The Reality Editor platform, once an MIT research summer project, matured in reliability and interoperability within PTC. After working closely with many customers in industrial use-cases, Valentin, Ben, and James, with PTC’s help, spun off to move with more agility in evolving their industry-first spatial operating environment into a commercial offering. For that purpose, Data Time Space was founded in 2025.

Data Time Space is just getting started. Our mission is to build the best spatial computing technology for the AI-powered industrial frontline, delivering tools that enhance efficiency, collaboration, and intelligent automation. We achieve this with our multi-tasking, multi-client, industrial spatial operation environment. Our first product, Data Time Space Recorder, already revolutionizes process analytics, reducing the time to get insights by a factor of four. From here, we will expand our capabilities and refine our technology as we pursue our mission.

Founders

Valentin Heun Ph.D. CEO

Technologist focusing on backend systems, networking, and cloud infrastructure. Co-author of the Reality Editor, an open-source spatial computing platform developed at MIT. Previously worked at Mozilla as a software engineer, where he was a contributor to the Smart Home Gateway project. Later joined the PTC Reality Lab, where he developed body tracking technology, cloud hosting infrastructure, a depth-enabled video streaming protocol, and spatial analytics capabilities. Passionate about open-source innovation, he once led a widely adopted project with over 400,000 users.

Technology leader specializing in frontend platforms, spatial computing, and UI/UX innovation. With a background in game development, he expanded into AR/VR and spatial computing as a co-author of the Reality Editor project at MIT. He later co-founded the PTC Reality Lab, leading the development of the Vuforia Spatial Toolbox and the Industrial Metaverse & Spatial Collaboration project, as well as contributing to academic research, patents, and international presentations. Now a founding member of Data Time Space, he applies his expertise in iOS, web development, 3D graphics, and computer vision to drive cutting-edge technology and high-performance solutions.
